1. Disconnect battery ground cable.

2. Drain coolant from radiator and engine block into container for reuse.

3. Remove oil filter, including the mounting base, from the engine block.

4. Remove core plug (arrow, Figure 1), located above the right side engine support, using a 22 mm socket.

NOTE: For vehicles produced prior to October, 1980 the core plug should be removed using a 19 mm (3/4") Allenhead driver.
5. Support the engine with a jack and remove the right side engine support arm.

6. Grind off the hex. corners of the block heater in order to clear the engine support.

7. Install block heater into engine block using a new rubber O-ring supplied in kit (B, Figure 2) on vehicles produced since October 1980, or using a new aluminum seal ring (A, Figure 2) on vehicles produced prior to October 1980. Torque to 70 N-m (52 lb. ft.) using a 46 mm (113/16") wrench or socket.

NOTE: When using the rubber O-ring, coat the block heater threads with M-B engine sealer, part no. 001 989 47 20, prior to installation.
8. Reinstall engine block drain plug using a new seal ring. Close radiator drain.
9. Reinstall engine support arm.

NOTE: A slight realignment of the motor mount heat shield may be necessary on some vehicles.

10. Reinstall oil filter mounting base and filter using a new gasket.

11. Attach power cable to block heater and route along suitable supports on the right side so that it ends in front of the radiator. Tie the cable with plastic straps to the supports as required.

CAUTION! Be sure power cable is away from exhaust manifold, otherwise cable may be damaged.

12. After checking coolant for sufficient antifreeze protection, refill cooling system and pressure test for leaks.

13. Reconnect battery cable, run engine with defroster on, check for coolant leaks. Check for proper heater operation and coolant level.
