Valve Cover: Service and Repair
Removing and Installing Cylinder Head Covers:
NOTE: When performing repairs, install only modified cylinder head cover gaskets.

These gaskets made of modified material have been installed since May 1991.

Removal and Installation:
The cylinder head has to be reworked as specified below before installing these gaskets in order to avoid subsequent leaks:
1 Remove and install injection valves.
2 Remove insulating sleeves. Replace seal when installing.

3 Seal bores (e.g.. with paper) and cover over timing parts in cylinder head as well as air flow sensor.
4 Chamfer the edges (e.g.. with hand grinder) at the bores (A) for the injection valves.
5 Dress contact surface (arrows) with emery cloth/emery paper (roughness 100-160) or oil stone in order to remove remaining burrs particularly in area of bores (A).

6 Mark reworked cylinder head with the letter "C".
NOTE: When performing subsequent repairs, the modified cylinder head cover gaskets can be installed on marked cylinder heads without the need for reworking.
A cylinder head also does not need to be reworked when performing repair work if the modified cylinder lead gasket is already fitted as standard. These gaskets can be identified from the Part no. (arrow).
